Propane Forklifts - What do I need to know about them?

Forklifts are powered via three different methods: battery (electric forklift), diesel, and LPG. Every type of forklift has specific advantages and disadvantages. Electric forklifts are very quiet and emission-free. Therefore, they are the best type of forklift for indoor transportation. Forklifts with a diesel engine are very economical and are characterised as being able to generate high levels of power without consuming very much energy, but they are not suitable for indoor use.

LPG forklifts are just as quiet as electric forklifts, and also have clean combustion, meaning that they can be used in enclosed rooms. This is possible because of the modern engine management system and the use of a clean propane gas as a fuel. However, carbon dioxide emissions can never be avoided when it comes to using a combustion engine. Propane gas is a fossil fuel, built upon carbon fuel, which when oxidised turns into the desired fuel. When using LPG forklifts indoors, it is highly recommended to have an effective exhaust system.

The structure of an LPG forklift

An LPG forklift consists of a slightly tilted lifting device with an attached fork, an engine, two axles with wheels, a driver's seat and a counterweight. Just like all forklifts, LPG forklifts are also steered by their back wheels. This means that they have a very tight turning circle and are easy to manoeuvre in small spaces. A stable driver's cab with a roll-over protection system protects the driver from being buried by the forklift if it tips over.

To refuel an LPG forklift, the propane gas tank has to be switched. This requires a large screw key. The propane gas tank is often installed at the rear of the vehicle. It is either attached with belts or a clamping system, which is easy to open. With some practice, a propane gas tank can be switched in less than two minutes.

Propane forklifts on Sale on TradeMachines - How do I choose the right model?

    1. When choosing an LPG lift truck, it is important to consider the working environment in which these machines will be used. For this reason, pay attention to the size of the machine and the level of emissions it produces (if working indoors).
    2. Specify what budget you have and search for a machine that will fit in your price range. Buying a used propane forklift is a smart solution to lower your investment costs.
    3. Remember about transportation costs. You can avoid them, when searching for an auction near you.
    4. If you are looking for a vehicle produced by a specific manufacturer, you can mark it in the filters.
